'Don't bring your lights'
The first Friday afternoon ride of the winter was already upon us, with a Lowick church start. The logic, presented by Lee when planning this ride was 'Not to bring any lights as it would only encourage us to stay out until it got dark' , was duly accepted by 50% of the bunch. Now then, this 'logic' went down a storm come 7:00pm, pitch black, slashing it down on the top of Parka-freakin-moor when Mars Bars and headtorches held an astronomical exchange rate to the desperate and needy. We couldn't put the whole blame down to Lee though, poor old Guy turned up showing off his brand new 4Kw Petzl lights, Nicko however insisted that this wouldn't be required and promptly left them in the van.

Starting from Lowick a little late as Lee had to measure some windows in Lindal, I'm unsure what happened but Lee wasn't a happy chappy on arrival, Richard said it was something to do with the Wagon Wheel he had a lunchtime, apparently back in the 70's they used to be 12" in diameter and 1" thick and not the 'theavin-gypo-tiny-biscuit' he'd had. So it was up to 'Baz I' who guided us through the shorter route through the farm and out towards Woodlands, cutting through Bog-City and around Burnmoor, across Torver common and out at the Torver Junction, by this time it was nearly 5.00pm with the rain coming in.

We scooted by road down for a brew where I think the service-with-a-smile was nearer Ambleside for the Coniston cafe stop, maybe that's what you get these days for not tipping? By this time the rain was getting heavy so we headed out down the east side, up Lawson park, although half way and went up the fire road as the light had faded badly. Across the top and toward Parka for some communal light sharing. Well, communal for some, Nicko might as well have kissed Guy on the check and handed him 25 pieces of silver before descending down Parka at his usual breakneck speed.

Despite the rain later in the ride and the 'character-building' darkness the ride was crackin, it was nice to have to daylight riding, but next time I can guarantee everyone will be kitted with lights.
