Your First Charity Bike Ride

Cycling for charity can be a great way of doing what you love while raising money, but there are still some things to consider before you commence your journey. Although cycling should always be enjoyed, it never hurts to ensure that all is as it should be beforehand.

Ensure You Check Your Bicycle Beforehand

While it can be seen as something of a pointless task if you’re using the bicycle often, the last thing you want to happen is for your bicycle to become defective while en route. If you’re not too sure what things you should be checking for, then consider taking it to a local bicycle shop, which can ensure that everything on the bicycle is working as it should be.

Never assume that everything is in working order, as any mishaps that occur during the charity ride could see you out of action for some time.

Consider Your Food Intake

Most charity bike rides have food stops along the way, but never assume this is the case. Depending on the distance of your bike ride, you need to ensure that you will have enough energy to see the ride through. Ensure you take snacks that have been made to release energy slowly. Many may be tempted to take every day snacks, but although sugary snacks will produce energy in the short term, it will leave you feeling more tired in the long run.

Ensure You Stay Hydrated

Just as it’s important to ensure that the body is well-nourished, it also makes sense to ensure that you stay hydrated. As with the food, ensure the fluids you consume are going to benefit you in the long run. A bottle of water will do much more to help keep you hydrated than an energy drink packed with sugar.

Don’t Focus On Winning

No one can take away how much adrenaline the thought of winning can evoke, but it’s worth remembering that this is a charity ride, so everyone involved is doing so to help the charity in question. There’s nothing wrong with having a competitive streak, but solely focusing on winning could mean that you are left disappointed if things don’t pan out your way.

If you do set goals, ensure they are realistic. Over performing will leave you tired, and will make the ride less enjoyable.

Check, Check & Check Again

While it could be assumed that cycling means taking very little, this is untrue. Evidently, traveling small distances rarely requires professional attire, but if you’re going to be on your bicycle for a number of hours, then having the right kind of equipment is a necessity.

Consider what you need for the charity ride. Some considerations to note are gloves, helmet, shorts, socks, a water bottle and some sunscreen.

Cyclists should always wear layers that can be adapted depending on the weather. For example, if a morning is colder than the afternoon, then some simple legwarmers can be a great addition, and can be easily removed should the weather improve.
